Wall Spray Foam in Chattanooga

Open wall cavities during a remodel or unfinished kneewalls in a cape-style attic are natural foam moments. We’re Chattanooga Spray Foam — explaining dense-pack alternatives, open- vs closed-cell in studs, and when flash-and-batt still wins.

When wall foam makes sense

Spray foam in 2×4 or 2×6 cavities air-seals better than imperfect batts — useful on windy ridge homes and leaky older stock. Once drywall is closed, injection foam is a different (and limited) conversation; most of our wall work happens when cavities are open.

Remodel open studs

Gut renovations downtown and on Missionary Ridge often foam exterior walls before drywall. Thickness and vapor goals decide open- vs closed-cell.

Kneewalls & attic rooms

Finished attics lose air through kneewall cavities and collar ties. Foam or carefully sealed batts need detailing — see also attic spray foam.

Flash-and-batt hybrids

A thin closed-cell flash plus fiberglass can stretch budget while cutting leakage. We talk hybrids without pretending every wall needs full-depth foam.

Cathedral / vaulted

Vaulted ceilings without a vented channel need careful thickness and vapor planning. Share roof assembly notes when you request a quote.

When walls can be foamed

Spray foam works best when wall cavities are open: during new construction, a gut remodel, or when interior drywall or exterior siding is removed. Once walls are closed, injection foam is an option, but it is a different product and process.

Open-cell vs closed-cell in walls

  • 2x4 walls (3.5 inches): closed-cell at about R-5 to R-7 per inch can reach higher R-values in the space. Open-cell at about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch fills the cavity at lower cost.
  • 2x6 walls (5.5 inches): open-cell fills more depth affordably.

R-values: HomeGuide, Spray Foam Insulation Cost (December 2025).

ENERGY STAR guidance for walls

For existing homes, ENERGY STAR suggests that when exterior siding is removed on an uninsulated wall, insulation be blown into the cavity and, in zone 3, R-5 insulative sheathing be added under the new siding.

Kneewalls

In finished attics and bonus rooms, kneewalls separate living space from unconditioned attic. Foam on kneewalls, and sealing the floor cavities behind them, cuts drafts. See attic spray foam.

Cathedral ceilings

Vaulted ceilings without a vent channel need careful thickness and vapor planning. Foam can fill the rafter bays in an unvented assembly when designed correctly.

Fire protection

Foam in walls must be covered by a thermal barrier, usually half-inch drywall. See ICC, International Residential Code, Chapter 3 (Section R316, Foam Plastic).

Wiring and plumbing

Electricians and plumbers should finish rough-in before foam. Moving wires or pipes after closed-cell is sprayed is hard.

Remodels in older homes

Homes in North Chattanooga, St. Elmo, and on Missionary Ridge often have balloon framing, plaster, and no insulation. Gut remodels are a chance to foam exterior walls and seal framing gaps.

Safety

Stay out during spraying and until curing and ventilation are complete. See U.S. EPA Safer Choice, Vacate and Safe Re-Entry Time for Spray Polyurethane Foam Application.

A worked example

A 1920s home in North Chattanooga is being gutted. The exterior walls are 2x4 with balloon framing and no insulation. The framing gaps between floors are sealed, closed-cell foam is sprayed in the exterior walls, and drywall goes back up. The rooms are quieter, warmer in winter, and cooler in summer.

Injection foam for closed walls

Injection foam is pumped into closed wall cavities through small holes. It is a different product from spray foam. Results depend on what is in the walls, such as fire blocking, wiring, and old insulation. Ask installers about experience and coverage checks.

Exterior walls during re-siding

When siding is removed, walls can be insulated from outside. ENERGY STAR suggests adding insulative sheathing under new siding.

Wall foam and windows

Seal gaps around windows and doors with low-expansion foam made for the purpose. High-expansion foam can bow frames.

Planning wall foam

  • Finish wiring and plumbing first.
  • Check for water damage and rot.
  • Plan fire blocking.
  • Choose foam type by cavity depth.
  • Plan for drywall over foam.

Cost

HomeGuide lists insulating all exterior walls with spray foam at about $4,000 to $10,000 nationally, and notes spray foam costs less in new construction because cavities are open.

Closed versus open walls in practice

Most wall foam happens during remodels. If your walls are closed and you are not remodeling, compare injection foam, dense-pack cellulose, and air sealing from the attic and basement.

Wall foam and sound

Open-cell foam in walls helps dampen sound from outside and between rooms. Homes near busy roads like Highway 153 or I-75 may notice the difference.

Summary

Wall foam is best planned during remodels and new construction, when cavities are open. Pick the foam type by cavity depth and moisture needs, finish rough-in first, and cover the foam with drywall.

Questions to ask

Can spray foam be added to closed walls?

Spray foam works best in open cavities. Injection foam is a different product used for closed walls.

Which foam is better in 2x4 walls?

Closed-cell reaches higher R-values in 3.5 inches; open-cell fills the cavity at lower cost.

Does wall foam need drywall over it?

Yes. Foam in walls generally must be covered by a thermal barrier, usually half-inch drywall.

Should wiring be done before wall foam?

Yes. Finish electrical and plumbing rough-in before spraying.

What does ENERGY STAR suggest for walls when re-siding?

Blow insulation into uninsulated cavities and, in zone 3, add R-5 insulative sheathing under new siding.

What is injection foam?

A foam pumped into closed wall cavities through small holes. It is a different product from spray foam.

What foam should be used around windows?

Low-expansion foam made for windows and doors. High-expansion foam can bow frames.

How much does wall spray foam cost?

HomeGuide lists insulating all exterior walls at about $4,000 to $10,000 nationally, less in new construction.

Does wall foam reduce outside noise?

Open-cell foam helps dampen sound from outside and between rooms.

When is the best time to foam walls?

During remodels and new construction, when cavities are open and rough-in is done.
