Spray foam for Apison homes and buildings

Apison is a rural, unincorporated community of about 4,400 people in eastern Hamilton County, near Ooltewah, Collegedale and the Georgia line. When the railroad came through in 1881, the settlement was named O’Brian, then renamed for the Apison shale found along the tracks. It is about 15 miles from the Enterprise South industrial park, where Volkswagen builds cars.

Rural homes and outbuildings

Apison has older farmhouses, brick ranches on large lots, and newer homes built as families moved out from Chattanooga for more space. Many properties also have barns, detached garages, workshops and metal buildings.

Common needs

  • **Older farmhouses.** Little or no wall insulation, leaky attics and crawl spaces with old stone or block foundations.
  • **Newer homes with large attics.** HVAC in the attic and bonus rooms that are hard to keep comfortable.
  • **Metal shops and barns.** Condensation dripping from metal roofs, and no insulation at all.
  • **Detached garages being turned into workshops or living space.**

Metal buildings

Condensation is the main problem in metal buildings. On cool, clear nights, metal roof panels lose heat fast and drop below the dew point, and moisture in the air condenses on the underside and drips on tools, vehicles and stored goods. Closed-cell foam sprayed on the inside of the panels stops this by keeping warm, moist air away from the cold metal. It also adds insulation and some rigidity. See garage and shop spray foam.

Farmhouses

Older farmhouses need a careful look at wiring, roofs and moisture before insulating. Foam on the rim joist and attic floor air sealing are usually good first steps. Where walls are opened during a remodel, foam in the stud bays makes a big difference.

Wells and septic

Foam work does not affect wells or septic systems, but tell us about any outbuildings with plumbing so we can plan around pipes.

Garages becoming living space

Many Apison owners turn a detached garage or shop into a gym, office, studio or guest space. Closed-cell foam in the walls and roof turns an uninsulated building into one that a small heat pump can keep comfortable. If the space will be lived in, the foam must be covered with drywall or another approved thermal barrier, and you may need a permit. Tell us how you plan to use the space so we can quote the right foam and barrier.

Barns with animals

Barns that house animals need ventilation, and closed-cell foam on the roof can reduce condensation without sealing the building completely. Tell us what the building is used for. Foam in an animal barn may need to be covered or kept out of reach so animals cannot chew it, and we plan the job so the building can be aired out before animals return.

For homes on wells, foam work does not involve the water system, but let us know if the well pump or pressure tank sits in a crawl or outbuilding we will be working in.
